I have been struggling with writing the past few days. Definitely not feeling it. This morning I was reading through some older stuff on my computer and came across this essay that was written by my now 17 year old daughter. She wrote this a little over 2 years ago. Be sure to read thru to the end as there is amazing insight there.

Where I’m From….

By L Wood

I’m from the same place still that I came from, lyz and snow

Lived in the same house my whole life,

I’m from memories that always flow through me,

Every time I’m home I remember happiness and strife,

I’m from dancing in the mirror and singing in the hairbrush

To playing with momma’s hair and daddy’s big bear hugs

Lyz and butterflyI was the little girl next door that couldn’t come out and play

And the girl who thought she was a boy until about 13,

I’m from the bridge over our favorite creek

That’s surrounded by pretty flowers in the spring

I’m from the top of my horse, lyz and geronimo

Who is my best friend and keeps all my secrets,

I can trust him

If you fast forward a little you’ll see,

I’m still from the same cute, little house,

But no longer a little girl walks out the front door,

But a young lady trying so hard to make her parents proud

elevate I’m from The Church at Covington and Elevate Youth Group,

I’m from frustration coming out of my Algebra 2 classroom,

I’m from a place that gets confusing,

But in this place God is able to use me

I’m from a small town,lyz dance (2)

Where it’s impossible not to see to see someone you know when you go out,

I’m from a dance studio were I’ve thought through so many problems,

As I let my feelings through in the way my body moves

lyz I’m from a place were most people don’t go,

That’s deep in my mind,

A place that I don’t ever really show,

I’m from trying so hard to be myself,

To learning it’s always possible… If you’re brave enough*.

*This is such a sweet line for me to remember. She loved the Chronicles of Narnia and Aslan says this to Lucy in the movie, which had come out some time before she wrote this

Such insight from a 15 year old!

There is a place in all of us, a place that we never really show, the place that we keep hidden because we are sure that people could not possibly like us if they knew ‘that’ person.

I know that she is still working on this herself, but I hope she is able to find some success while she is young. It sucks to be 45 and not be comfortable in being who I am, of not even being 100% sure of who that is yet. I know that I am getting closer to discovering me, that I am becoming more and more brave and digging deeper and deeper within to those areas within that I have locked away for so long.

So, even now, at 45, I am trying so hard to be myself,

as

     I

        discover,

                          one

                                 step

                                         at

                                              a

                                                 time,

                                                          who

                                                                  I

                                                                     really

                                                                                am.

What about you? Are you comfortable with who you are? Do you know who that person is? Did you always know or did it take some time to figure it out?

And where are you going?

road travelledAs we look back behind us, at our life, we can see the path that we have been down.

We see where we’ve been… what we’ve done.

We see the good times… and the not-so-good.

We are proud of the good choices we made… and would like to forget some of the poor ones.

We see where others we met and interacted with along the way have given us much joy… or brought us much grief.

Many times we would like to go back and change where our path took us

To avoid some of the negatives and the pain.

To end up in a different place than where we are.

These things are not possible.

All we can do with the past, positive or negative, is to embrace it, learn from it, and (this part many people don’t realize!)…

decide which way we want to go from here

Are we content with where our current path is leading? Or do we want to end up somewhere totally different?

The choice is yours. You get to decide what direction your life takes. You can make course adjustments. Did you know that pilots (and the autopilot) are constantly having to make minor course corrections? Being off by 1 degree can make a huge difference in where you end up. By the same token, making adjustments of 1 degree can totally alter your journey.
road less travelled

It doesn’t necessarily take a MAJOR life decision or change to get different results!

I met a wonderful lady this weekend, Laurie Smithwick, co-founder of Kirtsy.com who made a statement that inspired this post. She said…

“We are creating our future by deciding where to step.”

Awesome! You get to decide which direction you take your next step. A little to the right? A little to the left?

But, what about…

I know that we all have been dealt some tough stuff. There are some things out of your control. However, there are a lot of things YOU do have the ability to control, and you need to learn what those things are.

  1. Your thoughts
  2. Your Attitude
  3. How you take care of yourself (eat right, drink water, exercise)
  4. How you manage your time (saying No, turning off TV or PC, choosing family time over outside obligations)
  5. Learn to live in the moment

Even if you are at a place in your life where a lot of your time is committed to things that ARE important to you (children, family, career) determine even those small things that can make a shift toward the direction you want to head.

this way that way signFor example-

  1. Drink water instead of soda
  2. Go to bed instead of watching ‘just one more show’
  3. Take a 10 minute walk rather than vegging out. If you still want to veg when you return, go for it!
  4. Read a book on a subject you want to know more about, even if it is just 15 minutes on your lunch break
  5. Research that business idea floating in your head and start creating a plan, even if it is a 5 or 10 year plan
  6. Get a new haircut/style that better reflects you
  7. Go through your wardrobe and do your best to wear only the clothes that you feel good in, that make you feel confident
  8. Spend some time in reflection determining who “you” really are, and where you want your path to eventually lead.

What are some of the little (or BIG) changes you have made to point yourself in the direction you want to be going?

I will be expanding on some of these ideas over the next couple of weeks. Be sure to subscribe HERE so you don’t miss out on any of my posts!

…are you who you want to be?

This song by Switchfoot really shook me at the core when I was examining my life. Yes, we do have to deal with life circumstances, but there is a lot we CAN DO to change our situation!

Be sure to scroll past the video.

Please ignore the timing being off in this video.  They otherwise did an awesome job of editing and putting together the content.

That got your attention, didn’t it?
I don’t mean in THAT way, or actually, I guess it COULD be!

How lucky are you?

gambling luck rouletteDo you consider yourself lucky? Do good things seem to come your way?

Or do you feel as if you always have a gray rain cloud over you and you are never dealt a “good hand”?

A rabbit’s foot, a lucky charm, or determination?

I personally don’t believe in luck as some ‘magic’ force out there, waiting to ‘give’ itself to those who are ‘lucky’.

I believe we make our own luck. By changing your attitudes, behaviors and actions you can change your luck. If you see obstacles as opportunities rather than difficulties then you can turn them to your advantage.

Now, I am not talking about wishing for something. I mean, if you want to win the lottery, you’ve at least gotta buy the ticket! But that is not really the kind of luck I am talking about here. To make a change in your life for the better, you have to put forth some effort.

Luck comes down to your attitude and the actions you choose on a regular basis

We all know someone who seems to be lucky. Serendipity seems to be their best friend. Definition of serenditpityan aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.

True ‘lucky’ people create their own serendipity. They don’t sit around and wait for luck to find them, they make things happen. Experts agree that with a few simple steps, you can significantly increase the chances of meeting your soul mate, finding the right business partner, or steering your life in a new direction. That might sound unlikely or even naive, but there’s real science to prove that while you can’t control the randomness of life, you can definitely create your own luck.

So, how can you ‘Get Lucky”?

  1. Believe that YOU can be a winner. You CAN be successful. If you can’t believe in yourself, then who will?
  2. Learn to listen to yourself. You have to be comfortable in your own skin and trust what you are feeling and thinking. Develop your intuition.
  3. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Put yourself out there. Go to different places than you would normally go. Expand your horizons.
  4. Keep your eyes and mind wide open. Learn to ‘see’ with your heart.
  5. Work on other areas of your life. Want to be successful? Learn to do the things successful people do. Create the habits of successful people. Don’t know where to begin? Darren Hardy is a great place!
  6.  Expect to take 2 steps forward and 1 step back. No one succeeds in everything they do. Thomas Edison had 1000’s of failures before his light bulb actually worked. What if he’d given up after the 10th or even 100th attempt? Figure out what did work and what didn’t, make adjustments, and then move forward!

My daughter’s story

my daughters eyesI have a personal story to relate this. My youngest daughter is 17. She has had 4 jobs so far, each one she quit because she found something better by putting herself out there. She is starting online classes next week for fashion design. She wants to work in film and/or modeling as a fashion stylist.  So far, she has had 1 or 2 parts as an extra in TV/movies.

Last week, she spent the day with her boyfriend at a fitting for an upcoming feature role he has, she learned a lot from the wardrobe person, asking a lot of questions and watching everything going on around her. She actually ended up with a part that day as well, but her goal is to “get in the door” and learn the fashion and costuming side of the business. Her boyfriend worked his way up from being an extra to being a feature, just by talking to people. Not being afraid to start conversations and express his ideas. And she will be capable of doing the same thing, and learning and making connections.

Let me just tell you, we do not live in New York or in California, so we are not near major hubs for this sort of work. We live in a country town 60 miles outside of Atlanta, so she will have to ‘find’ these opportunities. The days of filling out an application and hoping someone calls is over.

Waiting for your ship to come in?

my ship to come inIf you want something in your life, I encourage you to start looking at steps you can take to make it happen. Learn everything you can about the subject. Research opportunities that might be close to you that you can take advantage of. You can’t sit at home on your hands waiting for your ship to come in! You need to be researching online, out talking to people, and then show up at the harbor asking questions!

What actions are you taking to create your own luck?

Never, never, never stop learning. Education did not end when you finished school. To continue to grow, you must continue to learn. If you stop learning, you stop growing and as a matter of fact, your mind will start to atrophy, just as an unused muscle would.

Pick a subject that you want to learn about and study it, such as:

– Nineteenth century history

– Knitting

– Woodworking

– Genealogy

OR,

– Starting your own business

Today, education doesn’t have to just come from a college and getting a degree. As a matter of fact, everyone and their brother has a degree now, so you need to do something different. But this education is more about expanding YOU and your knowledge base about things YOU love.

Between the Internet, the library, your local community college or technical school, and countless other resources, you can learn about ANY subject, AND meet others who are interested in the same things at the same time!

I think there used to be a public service announcement on PBS that said “The more you know, the more you grow” How true! I even found something written by one of the smartest and wisest men ever, Dr Seuss-

Share 3 subjects with us that you would like to learn about!

Do you even know? Or, maybe you don’t like the answer? You  can change direction! The first step in changing your life is realizing you are headed the wrong direction and then decide to make the change. You have the choice to change. You have in you what it takes, you just need to wake it up point it in the right direction.

You may say, I don’t have the strength to make those changes.  Many of us have  habits or circumstances that place limits and restrictions on us. I want to show you how you can eliminate some things that drain your energy and then show you some things you can add to your life that will increase your energy, emotionally and physically .

1. Get rid of all the petty things that bug you- a light bulb that’s blown, a door that squeaks, a computer glitch that just aggravates the stew outta you!

2. Eliminate the “shoulds”- as women we are really bad with the shoulds. We beat ourselves up over them. Again the words we use are powerful. Instead of saying “I really should exercise, say “exercise would be so good for me and make me feel better”. If it is important enough to you then set a goal, and make a plan to work towards it, but stop using that word!

3. Set big boundaries in your life. You have a right to say what you will and won’t allow. Boundaries are simply the things people can’t do to you, lines that will protect you and allow you to be your best.

So, ask yourself these questions:

What things bug you that you are going to get rid of?
What shoulds have you been telling yourself?
What boundaries do you need to set?

I’d love to read your answers! Stay tuned for the next steps!

Today, I want to share a few of the newest blogs I have come across in my blog surfing. I enjoyed them, and I hope you will too!

One of my favorites is Annette over at My Bucket List Journey! She has written her bucket list of things she wants to do, see, experience, in this life. Reading her website reminded me of the Bucket List movie, check out this great song with scenes from the movie. WARNING, get the tissues before you push the play button!

Of course, in an earlier post, “someday” was made out to be a dangerous word, a place where only wishes are made and nothing ever gets accomplished. Well, look what I found! Here is a blogger, Sara, and her blog is called Saving for Someday! The cool thing though, is her latest post talks about making sure that someday makes it there! And she shows you how to save money in running your household to help you reach some of those financial goals you have.

And the third is from Caitlin over at Mother’s Hideaway. Her recent post It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a….no, it’s just me. really shares the way we women have to STRETCH ourselves to our limits for our families! She’s got a great writing style, I think you’ll love her too!

This blog entry was in participation of a 31 day challenge going on over at SITS. If you are interested in learning more about blogging and building a better blog, come on over, you can jump in at anytime!
